The BloNo DSA Housing Working Group takes action to ensure access to safe, affordable, quality housing for all. We educate our community on housing needs and tenants’ rights, as well as organize to hold landlords and public officials accountable. We are committed to DSA’s statewide effort to lift the ban on rent control in Illinois, and pursue local policies that protect, expand, and improve low income housing in the Bloomington-Normal community. The Housing Working Group meets on the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6PM at the CoffeeHouse in Normal.
The BlonoDSA Labor Working Group recognizes that any meaningful socialist organizing will be driven by the working class. We therefore seek to engage and empower rank and file union members in an effort to develop the overall strength of Labor locally and nationally. We encourage the growth of new unions in new sectors – eg Graduate Workers United of IL State University – through member-driven social movement unionism. The Labor Working Group meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6PM at Schooners in Bloomington.
The BloNo DSA Medicare For All Working Group is holding regular canvasses to talk with people in our neighborhoods about their own concerns about our healthcare system and how Medicare for All could make things better. We meet with our representatives, host town halls, and host interactive events and fundraisers to better engage with people that are interested in improving our healthcare system. The Medicare For All Working Group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 4PM at the CoffeeHouse in Normal.
The BloNo DSA Political Education Working Group promotes leftist discourse in our community. With unceasing curiosity, we explore big ideas to uncover their local impact. Through our Political Education Forum series and various media publications (blogs, newsletters, etc.), we bring local experts together to discuss today’s hottest issues, to reveal deeper historical context, and to highlight ways that the community can create a more equitable world. The Political Education Working Group meets on the third Wednesday of each month at the CoffeeHouse in Normal.
The BloNo DSA Food and Health Working Group addresses issues such as food insecurity and the livability of our community. It meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 5PM at the Coffeehouse in Normal.
