The members of Bloomington-Normal Democratic Socialists of America and our comrades at Black Lives Matter Bloomington Normal celebrate today’s passage of the Pretrial Fairness Act as part of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ criminal justice reform bill, HB 3653 SFA2.
The General Assembly’s passage of the Pretrial Fairness Act comes as part of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus’ criminal justice reform bill, HB 3653 SFA2. This comes after the summer’s global uprising for racial justice, and not only ends the use of money bond, but will make many people ineligible for pretrial incarceration among other systemic reforms.
Our allies at the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice will host a press conference at 3pm today (1/13).
Click here to view the press conference. The event will be live, though a recording will be available at the link.
For two years, Black Lives Matter Bloomington-Normal and Bloomington-Normal Chapter of Democratic Socialists of America have worked side-by-side to end the racist and classist practice of wealth based incarceration by calling for an end to money bond. In 2019, our organizations allied with local faith and civil rights organizations to form the Decarcerate BloNo campaign, and joined the Illinois Network for Pretrial Justice to organize for passage of the Pretrial Fairness Act.
We know this fight is far from over. We will organize our community to defend this bill through to implementation, and to continue pressing onward.
Join us for a virtual town hall hosted by the YWCA Mclean County and Bloomington-Normal Chapter of the NAACP, this Saturday, 1/16, at 10am, where we’ll celebrate this victory and discuss its local impact.
