BLOOMINGTON, IL – Tonight, concerned community members along with members of Bloomington Normal Democratic Socialists of America will hold a vigil and call on the Bloomington City Council to enact a Welcoming Cities Ordinance after a whistleblower revealed forced hysterectomies on ICE detainees.
Dawn Wooten, a former nurse at ICE’s Irwin County Detention Center in Georgia made national headlines following her revelation that an “inordinate” number of people in ICE custody were forced to undergoe hysterectomies against their will. The news of this atrocity brings to light the tens of thousands of people who remain in ICE custody, including children, separated from their families, vulnerable to present and rampant COVID-19 spread and abuse by ICE and contractors.
“The atrocities being committed by ICE against women, children, and families is horrific, though not new. The United States is a history of racism, abuse, and neglect towards immigrants and indigenous people. Enough is enough. All families deserve to be free and together and safe from genocidal practices while on US soil, and our local elected leaders must use their power to protect them” – Krystle Able, BloNo DSA member.
Though Bloomington’s council failed to pass the measure in the same year, the Town of Normal passed their Welcoming Cities Ordinance in 2018. Now, residents are calling on the members of the Bloomington City Council to re-introduce and pass the ordinance which limits communication between local law enforcement and ICE.
Masks are required for all attendees of the event.
